The Second Sheffield Dinner is a huge success
Kevin Parkin, the Chairman of the British Metallurgical Plant Constructors’ Association, which represents companies at the forefront of the metal processing industry, hosted the association’s annual dinner in the ‘Steel City’ this month, at Sheffield’s distinguished Cutlers’ Hall. This was the second occasion that a BMPCA event has been held in the North of England and it was attended by almost 70 members and guests.
The principal guests were Dr Graham Honeyman CBE, the CEO of Sheffield Forgemasters International, together with, Martin and Elaine Howell, the Master and Mistress Cutler.
Kevin Parkin, who is MD of Sheffield heavy engineering concern Davy Markham, welcomed guests and in his opening address highlighted the need for British schools to prepare and train pupils for careers in manufacturing industry, rather than automatically directing them toward university.
Dr Honeyman highlighted the importance of competing internationally with the best available technology and the need for continued investment in research and development during these challenging economic times. Finally, the Master Cutler emphasised the value of training at all levels within an organisation, not solely the shop floor, since key sales & marketing, technical and financial skills are also required to run a successful business.
